At Blackbushe School of Flying we can take you from your first introductory flight in either a fixed wing Microlight (Ikarus C42) or our Piper Warriors (PA28), Single Engine Piston aircraft (2 seat Cessna 152 also available) – right the way through to gaining either a NPPL Microlight licence or a full EASA Private Pilot’s Licence. We offer various packages to help you complete your licence. You can pay as you go, or take advantage of one of our discounted packages.

NPPL Microlight

As stated in the British Microlight Aircraft Association website, a microlight is “an aeroplane”. Capable of flight in the same way as any other. It is restricted to two seats. It must weigh around 265kg at most and it must be able to fly at low speed. Other than that it’s an aeroplane! (A precise definition can be found on the same BMAA website.

A basic NPPL Microlight course is based on a minimum 25 hours flying training, which must include 10 hours of supervised solo, 3 of which must be solo navigational flights (i.e. away from your home airfield).

The basic EASA Private Pilot’s Licence – or PPL for short – is based on a minimum of 45 hours flying. This can be purchased on a pay as you go basis or as a complete package.

Ground School

The studying and taking of ground exams, should be prioritised such that students commit to and complete most of the exams before carrying out too much practical training in the aircraft. Some of our students have committed to completing these exams during the first 10 hours of their practical training. Studying this way will give you a head start on fully understanding the basics as you put them into practice after reading about it, rather than trying to understand the exercise based solely on a ground briefing then looking it up in the books after a flight. Our Instructors are happy to give any guidance towards any of the subjects.

All of the ground exams must be taken before the final skills test can be flown.

In addition to one-to-one ground school, we also run group sessions.


Flying Companion’s Certificate

You may be a regular passenger in a light aircraft and worried about what you should do in an emergency, if anything ever happened to the pilot. With CoPilot we will give you the basics, teach you how to land the aircraft safely just in case the unthinkable was to happen.

Night Rating

The Night Qualification is a great addition to your PPL. The course is a minimum 5 hours long, of which 3 hours must be completed with an instructor. You will also have to complete 5 take-offs and landings at night – solo.

Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC Rating)

The UK IMC rating is unique to the UK, IOM & Channel Islands. The IMC entitles the holder to fly in IMC weather, VFR on top of cloud and also to undertake instrument approaches such as the ILS and NDB procedures. The privileges of the rating can be used extensively within the UK.

  • Three month temporary membership
  • 15 hours dual training in a Piper Warrior  PA28 with IMC instructor
  • Blackbushe landings (up to 10 thereafter £16.50 per landing)
